In this paper, we investigate the interaction between semantic parameters and morpho-logical constraints in determining the distribution of the accusative case marker-(y)I in Turkish. The historical claim is that Turkish phrase structure has developed functional projections over time; the synchronic, typological claim is that some of these functional projections are not shared by all of the cognate languages of Turkish, i.e. by some of the other Turkic languages.
